Cooking Ham In A Crock Pot

ham in slow cooker

Beatriz da Costa

When a big food holiday rolls around like Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, ham takes center stage. Ree Drummond loves a good oven-roasted glazed ham, but she came up with a new take on the classic that's even easier: a slow cooker ham! The slow cooker is an amazing appliance (check out The Pioneer Woman slow cooker!). You've probably been using it for years to make set-and-forget soups, stews, and other slow cooker recipes—but have you ever tried making your holiday ham in one? Now's the time! Read on to find out how to make slow cooker ham—it's amazingly easy and so delicious.

Most hams you buy at the grocery store are pre-cooked, so you're already ahead of the game in terms of getting your meal ready. Your ham just needs to be warmed through and basted with a beautiful glaze (Ree loves the sweet-and-tangy soda glaze below). Cooking your ham in the slow cooker allows all of the juices to stay in one place, so your ham turns out extra moist and flavorful—perfect for all the leftover ham sandwiches and other ham recipes you're going to make! Plus, once you know how to make slow cooker ham, you'll be able to free up your oven for plenty of side dishes.

How do you cook a ham so it doesn't dry out?

Keeping moisture around the ham is super important so that it doesn't dry out. If you're cooking the ham in the oven, you can cover it with foil until the very end, but in the slow cooker you don't have to worry about it drying out. The slow cooker lid will help keep all the moisture in.

Can you put raw ingredients in a slow cooker?

Yes! Lots of slow cooker recipes call for raw ingredients. Hams are pre-cooked, though, so you only have to be sure that the ham is fully warmed through before serving.

What is the best way to cook a pre-cooked ham?

Try the slow-cooker ham recipe below, or you can bake your ham in the oven.

Can you cook dry meat in the slow cooker?

Yes! You don't need to add liquid to the slow cooker if you are cooking a meat that has a good amount of moisture. Ham has enough that it can cook in the slow cooker without a liquid.

  1. Heat the brown sugar, mustard, vinegar and 1/2 cup soda in a small saucepan until the sugar is melted and the mixture is bubbly. Reduce the heat and simmer until thick, 7 to 8 minutes.
  2. Pour the remaining soda into a 6-quart slow cooker. Stud the ham in several places with the cloves, then place the ham in the slow cooker. Brush the ham with 1/4 cup of the glaze (refrigerate the remaining glaze until ready to use). Cover the slow cooker and cook on low until the ham is hot throughout, 5 to 6 hours.
  3. A few minutes before the ham is ready, reheat the remaining glaze until warmed, about 3 minutes. Remove the ham from the slow cooker and brush with the remaining glaze. Carve the ham.
